Understanding Lymphoedema

Lymphoedema is a condition where excessive amounts of fluid accumulates in the tissues resulting in swelling of one or more areas of the body. Lymphoedema is due to a failure of the lymphatic system and occurs either to due damage or disruption to the system itself or when the demand for lymphatic drainage exceeds the capacity of the lymphatic circulation.

Primary Lymphoedema

This occurs due to the abnormal development of the lymphatic vessels. Swelling could present at birth or later during adolescence or adulthood.

Secondary Lymphoedema

The most common form of lymphoedema. Can occur due to:

  • Cancer treatments – removal of lymph nodes, radiotherapy and progression of disease

  • Trauma/soft tissue damage

  • Chronic inflammation

  • Infection i.e cellulitis

  • Filariasis

Also associated with:

  • venous disease

  • immobility

  • obesity

  • lipedema

Early identification and consistent care helps prevent disease progression.
