Lymphoedema Services

Early identification and consistent care prevents disease progression.

Lymphoedema is swelling which occurs when the lymphatic system is damaged, blocked or underdeveloped.
It occurs when the lymphatic system becomes overwhelmed; consequently a buildup of fluid and proteins in the body's tissues occurs. It commonly affects the arms or legs but may also occur in the chest, neck genitals. Over time this build up can cause permanent skin changes and hardening.

Studies show participating complete decongestive therapy can reduce limb size by up to 50% in 80% of people and improve function by up to 85%

1

Assessment and Treatment planning

Aims to identify the cause of your swelling, rule out any differential diagnosis and create a holistic treatment plan which meets your goals and works with your lifestyle. This includes bioimpedence spectroscopy scanning which is a gold-standard technology used in identifying and monitoring lymphoedema.

2

Complete decongestive therapy

The gold standard in lymphoedema management. This is a two stage approach consisting of intensive reduction and self-management. We will provide you with the treatment to reduce your swelling and soften your skin, whilst empowering you to manage your condition going forwards. Results include reduced limb volume, improved skin condition, reduced pain and improved quality of life

3

Prospective Surveillance

If you have had cancer you may be at risk of lymphoedema. Risk depends on a number of factors including: they type of cancer, lymph nodes dissection, radiotherapy, taxane based chemotherapy and a high BMI

Our surveillance program helps identify lymphoedema at a subclinical level before symptoms occur. With effective management at this stage, we can prevent chronic lymphoedema occurring.

Sarah is an ALA accredited lymphoedema nurse therapist who trained with the ALERT centre at Macquarie University, Sydney and has studied the management of genital, lower limb, upper limb, breast and head and neck lymphoedema.
